Lake View Cemetery, founded in 1869, was modeled after garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France and is referred to as a rural garden cemetery. As the cemetery association explains, it was developed five miles from town and designed to integrate landscapes with memorial sculpture and architecture. And on the 285 acres that comprise Lake View, one certainly gets a strong sense of this integration. A number of tours are offered by the cemetery, which cover geology, horticulture, architecture, history, nature and animals.
I learned to drive on the narrow, winding roads at Lake View. I spent a season as a docent at Lake View. Picnicked, walked, visited graves, studied shape and architecture and stone, trees and daffodils, and Cleveland history at Lake View. How do you feel about spending time in cemeteries? Studying botany or architecture or history in cemeteries?
